Come out of ‘hot’ interview zone as winner
For a fresher sending out resumes to find the first job is always exciting. Together with friends they set out to tailor the data to be attractive, to catch the employer’s eye and get the first interview call. When the much awaited interview call letter arrives at the door there is bound to be some joy. But soon realisation dawns that this is going to be a ‘big battle’. It turns out to be a nightmare as you ponder on how you are going to tackle all the tricky questions the intelligent interviewer is going to shoot at you. You imagine all the possible questions and try to make out answers in your head and still keep shivering that there may be some unknown questions that the interviewer is preparing for you. To be nervous before an interview is just human. But one need not be being terribly worried about it. Freshers need to learn that to be calm, cool and controlled is the first step to doing well in an interview. When the brain is calm it can focus on the issue at hand clearly and there will be 99 per cent chances that you will bring out the best in you. Second, never imagine that the interviewer is some sort of alien sent to know how every neutron in your brain works or that you have only negative ions in your thought process. Interviewers are ‘smart Alec’ executives, all right. They are trained to bring out your best reactions to some situations based on a set of questions that will get answers in that direction. As a fresher you yourself may not have assessed your capabilities or know how to react to a situation. The interviewer takes you on a nice uphill, downhill drive to put you at ease and gets to know that the gray matter in your brain is really worth buying for the company. Interviewers do not generally come with a preconceived image of their candidates. They go through the resume and ask you about what you have learnt in college and throw questions at you to know if you are better than the average guy. They are not looking for Einsteins or Newtons. So all that you have to do is get your basics right and have a little something extra in you that the previous or next fellow in the interview line did/will not have. There are two parts to any interview. The guy sitting opposite to you has a job to do and also has to answer his superiors why he picked a particular candidate or dropped one. So he is going to make you comfortable and jittery. He is going to test you in all waters – hot and cold!! But you must remain composed in either of the situations. In the comfort zone do not over react. Answer questions without showing emotions. Be precise in answering personal details regarding schooling, your favourite actor or places you like to travel to. Be assured that every Tom, Rita and Hari will come out shining through the comfort zone, except if someone went there to see what tie the interviewer was wearing. When he puts you in the hot temperature zone, do not exhibit nervousness or become jittery. This is the zone that will actually put you through the litmus test. Most people fumble here and in fact are so dumbstruck that they just mumble. Let that not happen to you. These questions are designed to get this common reaction out of people who are not ready to face some tough situations. Though there might not be exactly correct answers to these types of questions, making an attempt to answer them is itself taken as a good trait at facing awkward situations, which may pop up at work. What are these questions? There can be any number of such questions, but to test freshers some samples are: Describe yourself. What is your big weakness? Why do you want to join this organisation? What is your life ambition? Where do you want to be in five years? Answers to these stock questions must be worked out before you set out for the interview. Prepare brief three – four line answers. Do not leave any loopholes in the answers or the follow up questions can turn you to ice. Also let the answers sound factual, real and acceptable. Suppose you answer the question – Where do you want to be in five years? By saying I want to be the CEO, you are asking to be left alone and out of the job race. Work on these questions and make minor modifications according to the company and job that you are applying for. If you do so, you can come out of the hot zone as a winner.
